This fall has been busy for CHW London. Both of our active chapters have had their opening meetings and plan to hold many programmes throughout the year.
Rosh Hashanah was early this year and even before the opening meeting Kol Hashalom completed their second annual Rosh Hashanah Honey Fundraiser. This sale was successful once again and was expanded from last year. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to wrap and deliver the honey jars under the direction of Stacey Ublansky and Sande Marcus! Many thanks to the Faulkner family for once again supplying the honey.
Kol Hashalom Chapter had their opening meeting at the home of Debra Breuer, where Diane Goldstein made a presentation about her recent trip to Israel on the CHW Mission last spring. Afterwards there was a sale of unique jewelry.
The October meeting for Kol Hashalom was held at the home of Debra Kapp. Tech expert, Carmi Levy spoke about keeping your information safe when using the internet. Following the talk was a wine and cheese celebration of the completion of the London Hadassah Bazaar. Items from Thirty-one Gifts were available for sale.
On Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Kol Hashalom will be hosting their annual benefit at the Grand Theatre. This year’s play will be “The Buddy Holly Story.” On that evening, there will be a silent auction and a dessert buffet following the performance. If you are a season’s ticket holder at the Grand Theatre, it is very easy to change your performance date by calling the theatre. We appreciate your attendance and support on that evening. It is always a fun event!
Bertha Weinstein Chapter had their opening meeting in September at the Sir Adam Beck condo. Susan Merskey reviewed the book “Far to Go,” by Canadian author Alison Pick. The facilitator was Fran Scolnik and the hostesses were Brenda Ryan and Rachelle Chodirker.
Bertha Weinstein Chapter’s October meeting was at the home of Hazel Friedman. Hazel made a presentation about her recent trip to Berlin where she toured various important and historical Jewish sites.
The FINAL London Hadassah Bazaar took place on Sunday, November 1 at the London Jewish Community Centre. In preparation for the bazaar, there was a full-day baking bee held in the kitchen of Congregation Or Shalom. Many members came out to produce lots of yummy baked goods! We were fortunate to have media coverage in the London Free Press, the Londoner and the Canadian Jewish News leading up to the event. The day of the bazaar was very successful. In London, the “Hadassah Bazaar” has always been a truly community event! Members of the community (both female and male!) all come together to help. The sale included a selection of used clothing, shoes, linens, housewares and treasures. There was a bake sale and a cafeteria with a menu including latkes, blintzes, matzo ball soup and bagels with cream cheese and lox. There was take-out available too, always a popular option. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with set-up from October 28 to 31 and of course on the day of Bazaar! Although this was the final bazaar, we look forward to new fundraising initiatives.
Our chapters continue to meet on a monthly basis for social and educational programmes. If you are new to London (or not so new!) please consider joining our group of dynamic women.
