Welcome to CHW Montreal
CHW Montreal President, Sheila Nemtin Levine
As 2015 is soon coming to a close, and as we start preparing for winter, it is a great time to reflect on all of our amazing achievements of the past year. On November 8th, I attended CHW’s Annual General Meeting and National Leaders Forum in Toronto. It was wonderful to be surrounded by a group of dynamic and motivated women all striving to ensure the success of our fundraisers here in Canada so that we meet our goals to support our projects in Israel. I am proud to report that CHW sent $2.5 million dollars in 2015 in support of our programmes.
Claudia Goldman, our National President, gave a wonderful presentation on our daycares, hospitals, women’s hotlines and shelters which demonstrated the true impact we have and the difference we make in so many lives in Israel.
Since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, Israel has been there to receive Jews from all around the world. Some have immigrated by choice, however Israel’s system of immigrant absorption was designed for “rescue” which in Hebrew we call Aliyah, rather than “Aliyah of choice” and the numbers confirm this. In 1948, the population of Israel was 806,000 while Canada’s population was 12 million. Today the population of Israel is 8,3 million and Canada is 36 million. Israel is now at 10 times its 1948 population while Canada is only at 3 times its 1948 population. Because of this huge population growth, there is an immense need for social programs. This is where we – CHW – come in.
CHW helps the people of Israel and the new immigrants to Israel with quality and caring daycare centres, varied school programmes and other resources to give them a chance for a better future. It is a difficult and threatening world we live in today, and I believe the “why” in why we do what we do, is to ensure the survival of Israel, so that every Jewish person around the world has a safe place to call home in good times and in bad.
Our annual campaign drive is soon coming to a close. Many thanks to our donors who have made a donation for their continued support. If you haven’t made a gift yet this year, please call our office 514-933-8461 by December 23rd.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy Chanukah. I hope you can join us at our annual Chanukah Party taking place on December 9th at the Cote St Luc Aquatic center at 1pm. Our guest speaker Sharon Cohen will give an insightful presentation on “Health and Well-Being: Nutrition, Exercise and the Whole You.” What a great way to welcome in 2016!
