Welcome to CHW Vancouver
Once again it’s my pleasure to touch base with you and update you on all the wonderful events in our centre. However, as I write this for publication, Israel has been at war for four weeks and a tentative 72 hour ceasefire is to begin as is Tisha B’ Av. I find it difficult to write about how glorious our summer weather and life at CHW Vancouver Centre has been in view of the awful situation in Israel.
You have probably been reading the emergency campaign dispatches from our National office or have received the mail-out for our Emergency Campaign and followed the news closely. Our CHW projects in Israel require extensive additional resources, there’s no doubt about that. They need more personnel, they need more money. If you have not already done so, I ask that you support our emergency campaign and contribute to the projects and causes that mean so much to us all. CHW women are renowned for their generosity and ability to rise to the occasion, and I know that you will, as will I.
The past few months have been filled with surprises and successes, the most significant surprise coming to us courtesy of “A Walk in the Park,” which exceeded our expectations in a surprisingly delightful way. This event has run for some time in some of our sister centres back east, and got us to thinking “If Montreal can do it, so can we!” Apart from anything else, the scenery and climate in Vancouver fully lend themselves to an event of this nature (pun intended!) and we have our spirit and camaraderie as an added bonus. It was immensely gratifying to see how much support the event was given; everybody rose to the occasion big time! We initially set modest goals for our debut walk, treating this first effort as a pilot project to test the waters. Once fundraising began, we realized that the project not only had legs, it had wings! We raised the bar, increased our fundraising goal significantly, and met that goal. Kol hakavod to us! We’re looking forward to hosting next year’s walk and seeing the event grow into the major fundraiser it can and should become.
Our Annual Pro-Am Golf tournament was a spectacular day and Gaynor Levin and her Pro-Am Committee and our host of volunteers did us proud! Our other events and fundraisers are detailed elsewhere, and we certainly achieved our goal of compiling diverse programming that will broaden our appeal. We aim to include young and old, women and men and strive to reach potential members as well as existing ones. If you have any ideas for potential fundraisers, events or activities, please let me know – all input is welcomed.
As we continue with our fundraising efforts, we realize how desperate the Israeli situation is, and hope that we can contribute and assist to the very best of our ability. Please don’t forget to mark your calendar for our Council Opening event September 21st and I hope to see many of you there!
