Spring has officially arrived and we have certainly thrown off the winter blahs and been very busy. Our Annual Campaign has been successfully launched by Campaign Chair Toby Rubin and her very able team. If you have already responded we thank you! We will be continuing to reach out to all of you for your support.
We also just hosted the first of an ongoing series on “meducationals” on health-related issues. Our first talk, on Ovarian Cancer and Jewish Genetics, was very well received. This lesser-known cancer has no screening test, significant misperceptions, and is the most fatal women’s cancer with a definite Jewish connection to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutation with a strong connection to Ashkenazi Jewish women and also a breast cancer. Our special guests were Tracy Kolwich and Marlena Cross from Ovarian Cancer Canada, Pacific Region and Melanie Taylor, the Clinical Coordinator of the Heredity Cancer Program of the BC Cancer Agency. Their presentations were compelling and educating on many levels. What really brought the evening home was hearing the personal story of CHW Dorot Chapter President Ginaya Peters who was “celebrating” the one year anniversary that day of her double mastectomy and her decision to become a “previvor”, which included preventative removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes.
We have two events happening very soon:
This Sunday, March 31st, is the annual Dorot Chapter Intergenerational Tea from 2-4 p.m. at the home of Michelle Dodek. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the older ladies to reconnect and for our younger members to be inspired by their predecessors. News and views will be exchanged over tea and cake. We can arrange rides if necessary. Call Sharon at the Vancouver office (604-257-5160) or Michelle Dodek (604-733-3899) to make arrangements.
We have many more events on the Council calendar – be sure to check them out!
We continue to try to build bridges and consistently strive to connect with our members on a more personal level. In order to get to know you better, we need more details, so please help us by supplying biographical information, as detailed on the Biography Update Form. Please help us by contacting the office to provide your details, or click here to access the form on-line. Once you’ve done that, your name will go into a prize draw every month. Congrats to Fran Goldberg, last month’s lucky winner!
On the subject of updating records, we noticed that some memberships need to be renewed. Please be sure that yours is current. If in doubt, feel free to call the office to check. Remember that there is a special deal on membership renewals this year – you have the option for signing up for a Petro Canada Preferred Price Card – an added incentive for renewing now. Keep in mind that you can also upgrade to a life membership rather than renewing annually.
We continue our commitment to helping local women in need, and would welcome more donations of new, unused cosmetics products. The last donation we made to JFSA was greatly appreciated, and we’d like to continue making contributions to Jewish women in our community. Items can be dropped off at the office.
Our Passover chocolates will be arriving early next week! Thank you to those who supported us. Although the deadline for ordering chocolates has passed, it is not too late to order flowers for your Seder table! Our affiliates at Flowerz will donate 10% of the value of every floral arrangement purchased to CHW. Call Flowerz at 604-742-1000 and mention CHW when you place your order.
