CHW in Canada

Your Partner in Canada

Our vision is to excel at creating impact for projects and programs in Israel and Canada. We strive to be recognized as leaders and innovators by our supporters and beneficiaries, while also empowering our volunteers with leadership opportunities.

CHW also partners with many different organizations in Canada, and CHW supporters from coast to coast participate in these charitable activities.

In 2022, CHW hosted 50+ fundraising events in support of at-risk women and children. In Canada, we supported 220+ local Canadian youth through leadership programs, counselling services, experimental learning programs, mental healthcare, and scholarships/bursaries for post-secondary education.

By supporting CHW, you are ensuring local programs can thrive. With Centres across Canada, there are many ways for you to support those in need right here at home:

National CHW Projects Across Canada

Franny’s Fund

In January 2021, Rebecca Snukal (B.A., LL.B. KC.) founded Franny’s Fund to provide help for parents and families in need of an urgent response, who are unable to access critical services.

In partnership with Franny’s Fund, administered through the Canadian justice system, at-risk women and children across the country have access to the necessary support for legal counsel or therapeutic counselling services.

Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ)

Each year, CHW provides funding to CANADIAN YOUNG JUDAEA summer camps in Canada, which aim to strengthen young members’ Jewish identity and principles. CHW is honoured to have grown alongside such a wonderful organization, and enjoys serving children and youth in Canada and Israel together.

Founded in 1917, Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ) is Canada’s largest Jewish youth movement with active centres from Vancouver to Halifax. Its ideology is pluralistic and apolitical. CYJ’s aim is to strengthen its young members Jewish identity with an emphasis on the centrality of Israel. Canadian Young Judaea offers a wide range of year round and summer programs across the country and is affiliated with six camps, which are:

Camp Shalom, Gravenhurst, ON
Camp Solelim, Sudbury, ON
Camp Kinneret, Mont Tremblant, PQ
Camp Biluim Canada, Mont Tremblant, PQ
Camp Hatikvah, Kelowna, BC
Camp Kadimah, Nova Scotia

JOLT

CHW supports the JOLT PROGRAM AT CYJ. JOLT, or Jewish Outreach Leadership Training, is CYJ’s flagship program for youth tikkun olam, or community outreach. Participants in the program receive a minimum of 20 hours of community service and have the opportunity to engage in active, social causes and receive hands-on experience volunteering in the community. The main educational objectives of the JOLT programs are: leadership, tikkun olam, development of Jewish identity, and developing ties to their kvutza/community. CHW  is proud to be connected with CYJ and helping to make a difference in the lives of so many young adults.

Machane Lev and Lev in the City

CHW proudly sponsors a one-week, Jewish overnight camp
for children and youth who are LGBTQ2+ or come from LGBTQ2+ families/communities.

CHW Calgary Centre

Toy Drive

For over 20 years, CHW Calgary Centre has held a toy drive in time for the holidays. Gifts of toys, movie passes, and gift cards are given to  JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE CALGARY (JFSC) and the ALBERTA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (ACH) for distribution to families in need. This mitzvah project supports the local community and reflects CHW’s values of investing in education, healthcare, and social services. This year’s 22nd Annual Toy Drive is also in support of Franny’s Fund and the CHW Emergency Appeal.

Scholarships at Alberta University of the Arts

CHW Calgary Centre also supports two annual scholarships, awarded to students enrolled in the Jewellery program at ALBERTA UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS (AUArts). The AUArts scholarships have been awarded since 1989.

CHW Edmonton Centre

Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary

Since 2009, CHW Edmonton Centre has proudly sponsored the Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary. The Bursary celebrates Terry’s life, and honours her work with children in the early learning years. The $1,000 annual bursary is awarded to full-time, second-year students enrolled in the Early Learning and Child Care Program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Terry Horwitzz”l graduated from the program in 2004.

The CHW Canada Award

For over 25 years, CHW Edmonton Centre has provided the University of Alberta with $4,000 annually to support student bursaries and scholarships. The CHW (Hadassah WIZO) Canada Award is bestowed upon undergraduate students, enrolled in the Women’s and Gender Studies program, based on academic achievement and financial needs.

CHW Montreal Pro-Am Supports Myra’s Kids Foundation Summer Camp

A portion of the proceeds from the 2022 Pro-Am For Kids will be donated to Myra’s Kids Foundation Summer Camp (MFK). MFK is the largest network of free non-denominational bereavement summer camps in North America, designed for children and teens aged 6-17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them. CHW Montreal Centre takes pride in this partnership. MFK Summer Camp Montreal brings hope into the lives of bereaved children and teens by providing a safe environment to share their story, process their grief in healthy ways, and honour the memory of the person who died.
